Sustain Me App: Australia’s first innovative recycling mobile app

Nov 18, 2015 Sustainability

Mobile users in Victoria now have access to reliable information on how to recycle locally. The group received independent evaluation and finalist status in the Smart Technology Category from the Banksia Sustainability Awards judges.

The app has found early support from four Victorian councils, Moonee Valley City Council, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Whittlesea City Council and Moreland City Council. Users outside of this area will still get important recycling information thanks to Sustainability Victoria.

The Sustain Me application is the first of its kind, designed specifically to tackle information gaps relating to recycling across Victoria and supporting councils to reduce waste sent to landfill. The
four councils have recognised this innovative platform and will provide residents with specific information about sustainability events, programs as well recycling information.

Co-Founder and Director of the Sustain Me Group, Stephen Halpin, said that while it’s great to have support now, it’s been a difficult 24 months developing the program and they are just so
pleased people are using it. Eleanor also noted how thrilled she was that the app was making a difference across Victoria, with over 22,000 litres of waste recorded as being re-directed from landfill.

The pair made the app because they were interested in recycling, but recognised a lack of knowledge. Their research found that people become trapped in incorrect habits or behaviours when
they are not aware of better ways to act. The app will help them at the point of decision making, giving the person accurate information information immediately, thereby removing the guess work.

Eleanor and her business partner Stephen hope that every possible item that can disposed of is eventually categorised and listed in the Sustain Me application with specific instructions on how to
discard it, while prioritizing recycling information to help the community live more sustainably.

The free application is available now to all Victorians on the iOS App Store and Android’s Play Store. To date the application has helped solve over 5000 recycling based queries since launch in
August. The Banksia Award winners will be announced on the 13.11.2015
